M.S.Ed. School Psychologist, Class of 2019
I chose to attend Brooklyn College because I heard several positive reviews of the School Psychology program. Growing up in Brooklyn, this college had also been an important institution in my life prior to attending for grad school. My mother received her Master's degree from Brooklyn College and I attended pre-school here while she worked toward her degree. Applying for the program felt as if I was coming full circle.
My degree will allow me to work as a Certified School Psychologist and has prepared me with a well-developed background in human development, counseling, assessment, and more. I feel confident in the skills that I've learned and in my ability to translate those skills into action and further learning. I plan to work in as a School Psychologist in an elementary or preschool setting.
During my time in the program I was able to do work in three different school; one for a single project, one for practicum, and one for internship. My experiences in schools were the highlight of the program for me because I was able to learn through experience and interact with children throughout my learning. This hands-on experience helped to reaffirm my desire to enter the profession and taught me a lot about what the career really looks like.
I think the students make the School Psychology program unique. I've met so many wonderful, diverse, and passionate peers throughout my time at Brooklyn College. I have every intention of maintaining relationships with them as we all enter the field. In addition, the School Psychology community is amazing. The students develop strong bonds and help each other throughout the program. The faculty is extremely supportive and they are able to provide valuable insight about the field in general and their particular expertise. We all come to know each other well over the course of the program and the main Psych office door is always open.
My advice for incoming students would be to stay organized, build relationships, and remember the impact you can have. Join the Graduate Association of School Psychologists (G.A.S.P.), if you want to help plan fun events for students in the program!
