Ready to take the next step?
M.S. Business Administration - Accounting, Class of 2020
My honest reason for attending Brooklyn College would be the beautiful campus in the middle of the NYC concreate jungle. Every time I drove down Bedford Avenue, I have always found myself slowing down to look at the Georgian style library building situated on the East Quad. Being on the Brooklyn College campus gives you the feeling that you are attending one of the out of state luxurious colleges. After finishing my associate, there was no doubt in which college I would attend. Brooklyn College has a wide selection of majors to choose from and most importantly one of the most affordable colleges in the city.
Being in the Masters in Business Administration concentrating in Accounting teaches you a lot about leadership and team building. It is exactly what you will be doing at work when you become an administrator. The program also taught me how to do business research and writing-which helped me enormously to write reports in my present occupation.
I currently work as an Audit Supervisor for a city agency. Achieving my degree is a step I took to move up in the rank. However, my long-term goal is to become a professor. As a people person I want to reach out to the younger generations and share my knowledge and experience with them. When I was a student in Brooklyn College, I had professors who gave me the confidence and assurance that I can success in life. I want to leave this kind of imprint to another person’s life.
Living in the internet age, sometimes we are exposed to a little too much information. Sometimes it’s difficult to filter out the useful information. In my graduate program I had two classes in Business Research where we specifically learn how to research and gather information needed for the project. In the Business Analytical class, we learn Tableau, which is a data visualization software. It was great to learn about a new computer software that you get to use in a real job.
No amount of words is enough to describe how great the Brooklyn College staff, faculty, and administration are. This time around when I attended Brooklyn College as a graduate student, professors were more like mentors. They understood that as a student you are juggling so many things at the same time and they are always there to guide you to the right direction. I remember stopping by Professor Bassell’s office countless time for advice and guidance. He always reached out however he can to help his students. Professor Raghupathi is another great instructor who always has the best interest of her students in mind. The Business Analytical class was one of the challenging classes in the program but she taught us step by step so students with no data analysis experience did not fall behind.
The idea of grad school is scary for some reason and it get scarier when you are a mother and employed full-time. I was accepted to the program in 2017 but having a two-year-old toddler at home I got cold feet. So the following year I brushed off all my excuses and told myself I will give grad school a try. In Fall 2018 I started with one online class and rest is history. Even pre-COVID-19, Brooklyn College offered many online classes for the School of Business graduate programs. Being a full-time employee and with my other responsibilities, online classes helped me tremendously. Another plus point was my program offered classes throughout the year including winter and summer sessions. Taking one or two classes per semester gave me the opportunity to finish out the program and also gave me the financial ability to pay out of pocket. Brooklyn College has a payment plan program for tuition, which decreases your financial burden. I was able to graduate in Spring 2020. What I am trying to clarify is Brooklyn College graduate programs are designed to fit in your busy schedule and life. The program helps you to get higher education and maintain your lifestyle. Don’t be frightened, just dedicate yourself to the program. Before you know it you will have grad school on your resume.
