    • India: Global Health

    India: Global Health

    July 7 – 30, 2014 (Summer Session II)

This intensive three-credit program introduces students to India through the study of global health and social anthropology. Students stay at the world renowned Comprehensive Rural Health Program (CRHP) in Jamkhed, Maharashtra, India. CRHP is a world leader in the primary health care movement and has trained physicians, nurses, public health workers and local rural health workers for 40 years.

Students visit rural villages to observe first hand the everyday activities of village health workers. Students accompany the Comprehensive Rural Health Project mobile team of Ayurvedic physicians, nurses, social workers and development specialists on routine visits to villages. An inspiring part of the program is meeting women village health workers and learning from their own testimony about their life transitions from teenage brides to respected village health practitioners and political leaders. At Ellora and Ajunta, students visit the sacred monuments of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism and learn about the history and culture of India. In Aurangabad, students view the historic Bibi-ka Magbara mosque built in 1661. In the city of Pune, students tour the Raja Dinkar Kelar Museum of Indian life and the Tribal Museum, and experience modern Bollywood-influenced shopping malls.

Dr. Shobha Arole, the medical director and international health expert, lectures on global health, community health worker training and rural medical care. Seminars with Associate Professor Antoniello, IGH program director, focus on the dramatic changes in the health and well-being of rural villagers and anthropological approaches to global, social, political and economic matters in the local context.

This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students, all majors.
