CUNY-BC Study Abroad in China

May 28–June 18, 2018
(Summer Session I)

Experience five cities in three weeks! Brooklyn College in China combines course work in speech, history, business, and/or Chinese language with an extensive cultural and historical exploration of China, allowing students an opportunity to experience this unique country and culture through observation and interaction with local people and places. Participants will travel to five of the most famous and beautiful Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an. Side trips include exploring the Forbidden City, climbing the Great Wall, and visiting Tiananmen Square, the Terracotta Warriors, various Buddhist temples, Islamic mosques, and other historical and cultural sites of interest. Course selection is from among Chinese culture, history, language, and intercultural perspectives (please refer to the program website for details).

All courses will be taught by Brooklyn College faculty, under the direction of Professor Shuming Lu of the Department of Speech and Communication Arts and Sciences. This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students, all majors.

Program Dates

May 28–June 18, 2018

Program Fee

$3,430 (includes international round-trip airfare to China, CISI health/travel insurance, program-related transportation in China, excursions, housing, trip gratuity, and some meals)

Program Fee Payment Schedule:

  • Nonrefundable Deposit Due: With Application—$450
  • Second Payment Due: Friday, March 30, 2018—$1,450
  • Final Payment Due: Wednesday, April 18, 2018—$1,530

Additional Costs

  • Brooklyn College tuition and fees for three or six credits.
  • Out-of-pocket costs ($400 estimated minimum) for personal expenses, visa, laundry, and out-of-pocket meals.

Estimated Totalled Basic Program Cost*: $3,830, plus Brooklyn College tuition and fees for three or six credits.

  • *Selected optional side trips to local tourist attractions (e.g., Hong Kong, Yangzhou, Yellow Mountain) incur additional costs.

Courses and Credits

Participants are registered for courses by IEGE. Three or six credits may be taken in the area of Asian business, chemistry, Chinese language, intercultural communication, history, television/radio, and more. Final course offerings depend on enrollment. For a complete list, see the program website. Commonly offered courses are:

  • BUSN 3175: Asian Business
  • CHIN 1010: Intensive Elementary Chinese
  • CHIN 1020: Intermediate Chinese
  • CHIN 2024: Advanced Chinese Language Skills
  • CHIN 2110: Classical Cultures of China
  • HIST 3005: The Shaping of the Modern World
  • HIST 3534: Revolutionary China
  • PHIL 3722: Asian Philosophy
  • SPEC 1619: Intercultural Communication
  • SPEC 7296X: Special Topics: Intercultural Communication (graduate students only)

Financial Aid/Scholarships

Financial aid may apply, and alternative loans are available. Scholarships that apply to this program are: Furman, Gould, and SASA, among others (see Scholarship Opportunities).

How to Apply

  • Fully complete and submit the China program application, and contact the program director to express your interest in joining the program.
  • A $450 nonrefundable deposit is due with your application. Applications will not be accepted or considered complete without your deposit and students should consult the information on the Cost & Payment section of the China program website. Please note this deposit of $450 will only be returned if you are not accepted to the program.
