Antigua and Barbuda: Heritage, Sustainability and Climate Change in Small Island Developing States

Antigua and Barbuda are the sites of this fascinating program that fulfills Core requirement CORC 3208 and combines classroom lectures with local excursions to study Caribbean and specifically Barbudan culture, with archaeological site visits and excavation, GPS training, and biodiversity data collection. We will use new and exciting digital technology to collect lots of images through a quadcopter in action. This program is an intensely fun learning experience about a Caribbean community in transition. There are no pre-requisites for this class except curiosity, openness, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to experience new things and meet interesting people. The program takes place at the Barbuda Field Station (BRC). In addition to the core class, students will also choose one of three tracks for specialization — aquaponics, museum work and education program development (K–6), and/or archeological excavation. Participants will observe and join together with several international researchers as they do prehistoric and historic archeological digs. The primary focus of the course will be understanding the challenges of climate change and sustainability in Barbuda, excavation and analysis of archaeological artifacts, as well as experiencing food ways and culinary traditions. Students will live in shared rooms in houses in Barbuda.
This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students, all majors.

$2,468 (includes CISI health/travel insurance, program-related transportation in Antigua and Barbuda, excursions, housing, and three meals per day)

Additional Costs
- Brooklyn College tuition and fees for three credits.
- Out-of-pocket costs ($100 estimated minimum) for personal expenses and out-of-pocket meals.
- $700 for international round-trip airfare to Antigua.

Participants will register for one three-credit course, selecting from among the courses listed below. Final course offerings will be dependent on course enrollment.
- ANTH 7010X: Special Topics in Anthropology (graduate students only)
- CORC 3208: Comparative Studies in Cultures and Transformation

How to Apply
- Complete the IEGE Notification of Study Abroad/Brooklyn College Study Abroad Application (pdf) and submit via e-mail to the International Education & Global Engagement office, or in person at the IEGE office, 1108 Boylan Hall.
- A $300 nonrefundable deposit is due with your application. Students will pay directly at the Brooklyn College Bursar's Office and must attach their paid receipt to their application when submitting to IEGE. Applications will not be accepted or considered complete without a receipt. Please note this deposit of $300 will only be returned if you are not accepted to the program.
