  • Barbuda: Introduction to GIS and Geospatial Field Techniques in the Caribbean

Barbuda: Introduction to GIS and Geospatial Field Techniques in the Caribbean

Summer Session — 2012

Come learn about the natural and cultural history of Barbuda, a beautiful, small, low-lying island in the Eastern Caribbean. In this intensive three-week immersion, students will learn extensive field and computer mapping skills using GPS, total stations and air photos as well as geographic information systems (GIS) and image processing of satellite images. GIS is used widely in the natural and social sciences, and has many applications in business and management. So, why not learn field mapping and GIS in a beautiful setting while gaining valuable skills? In addition to mapping, students will have the opportunity to learn about the flora and fauna, soils, archaeology, karstic geology, climate and sustainable development of Barbuda. Students will stay at the Barbuda Archaeology Field Station, take archaeological and ecological excursions (e.g., frigate bird colonies and Nelson's Dockyard in Antigua), and swim in the warm Caribbean next to pristine sand beaches.

Open to undergraduate and graduate students, all majors.
