Changes in Academic Affairs
May 26, 2022
Dear colleagues,
As the semester comes to a close, I have some additional announcements about changes in academic leadership that will begin on August 25th.
Please join me in thanking April Bedford who will step down as Dean of the School of Education at the start of the fall semester to become Senior Associate Provost for Academic Programs and Services. April has led the school to distinction as an outstanding and premier engine of teacher preparation at all levels in NYC. Her background as an educator will benefit the college greatly in her new role as we enhance programming that advances student achievement and deepens our relationships with New York City high schools and community colleges. María R. Scharrón del Río will become Interim Dean of the School of Education. As the current Associate Dean, Maria brings extensive experience and skills in administration, accreditation, assessment and mentoring to this critical leadership role.
I also want to thank Kenneth Gould who has decided to leave his decanal role and return to the Sociology and Urban Sustainability faculty at the start of the new academic year. Ken has led the School of Humanities and Social Sciences to excellence through his vision, intellectual rigor, support for interdisciplinary programming, focus on the community and borough, and his initiation of innovative programming, including the school-wide decolonizing the curriculum initiative. Rosamond S. King will become Interim Dean of the School. Rosamond brings exceptional creativity, administrative acumen, and programming and mentoring skills to this important leadership position.
I hope you will join me in thanking April and Ken for their remarkable service and in welcoming Maria and Rosamond to their decanal roles. I very much look forward to working with them in the coming year.
I am sorry that I did not have an opportunity to share this news with all faculty in person. I hope that the fall semester brings us together on campus.
If I can assist you in any way, please contact me (x 3594; anne.lopes@brooklyn.cuny.edu).
All best wishes for an enjoyable and productive summer season,
Anne
