Reaffirmation Statement
October 1, 2021
Dear Campus Community,
Brooklyn College is committed to values and policies that enhance respect for individuals and their cultures. In support of diversity and inclusion, and building on the strengths of our multicultural campus, the college has developed programs designed to combat bigotry and enhance compassion and understanding across differences.
Brooklyn College’s senior leadership fully supports policies and practices designed to foster non-discrimination, affirmative action, and diversity and inclusion in the workplace, including CUNY Policies and Procedures on Equal Opportunity, Non-Discrimination, and Sexual Misconduct. These policies underscore our commitment to recruit, employ, retain, promote, and engage in other personnel actions without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, ethnicity, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, marital status, partnership status, disability, genetic information, alienage, citizenship, ancestry, military or veteran status, unemployment status, pregnancy, or status as a victim of domestic violence/stalking/sexual offenses, or any other legally prohibited basis, in accordance with federal, state, and city laws. Italian Americans are included among CUNY’s protected groups, and employees and applicants shall not be subjected to harassment or discrimination because they engaged in exercising any rights provided for in equal employment opportunity regulations. As a federal contractor, CUNY supports affirmative action consistent with federal requirements. I invite you to review the CUNY Policy on Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination in its entirety, including its complaint procedures and prohibition against retaliation.
Brooklyn College’s executive and administrative offices are responsible for maintaining a work environment free from discrimination and harassment. I have assigned responsibility for the implementation and monitoring of our compliance with all relevant policies and laws to Anthony Brown, Esq., executive chief diversity officer and special assistant to the president, who also serves as our Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator. The vice presidents, deans, directors, managers, and supervisors at the college also share responsibility for ensuring the workplace is free from discrimination and harassment. Our Diversity and Equity Programs Office is at 2147 Boylan Hall, 718.951.4128. For complaints related to discrimination and Title IX, contact Ivana Bologna, Esq., Title IX coordinator, at 1216 Boylan Hall, 718.951.5000 ext. 6468.
I ask for your continued support to ensure equal opportunity, affirmative action, diversity, and inclusion in all employment practices at Brooklyn College.
Yours truly,
Michelle J. Anderson
President, Brooklyn College
