Creating a Presidential Advisory Committee for College Staff
February 2, 2021
Dear Colleagues,
As we begin the new year, we are hopeful that 2021 will be happier and healthier for all.
This semester, we are continuing the work to make Brooklyn College a more inclusive space. Last semester, we asked staff about their needs and concerns. Staff members told us that they wanted more of a voice at the college. They said that they would like opportunities to communicate with the leadership of the campus about the issues and concerns that most affect them.
I am pleased to announce that I am establishing a Presidential Advisory Committee for Staff, open to staff members across departments and titles. If you are interested in participating, please send an e-mail to Tony Thomas, chief legal counsel, or Ayana Murray-Richards, human resources director of recruitment and instructional staff. We are hoping the committee can have its first meeting in late February.
The Presidential Advisory Committee for Staff will be in direct communication with my leadership team and will make recommendations to us on matters that affect the staff. To begin, we will ask the Advisory Committee to deliberate on the needs of the staff and recommend trainings and professional development opportunities for them. Additionally, in late fall, the Faculty Council asked me to "appoint to the Support Staff Screening Committee at least one professional staff employee nominated by other members of the professional staff." We will ask the Advisory Committee to nominate employees for that new position.
Developing a Presidential Advisory Committee for Staff is an exciting endeavor. I am happy to provide an opportunity for campus leadership to hear directly from staff on a regular basis. I hope very much that the Staff Committee will help Brooklyn College become more responsive to the hardworking and important members of our staff. Thank you.
Yours truly,
Michelle J. Anderson
President, Brooklyn College
