The Brooklyn College IACUC is charged with the responsibilities of overseeing all the college's animal programs, animal facilities, and policies ensuring appropriate care, ethical use, and humane treatment of animals. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Inspecting all of the animal facilities, including animal study areas and satellite facilities, at least once every six months.
- Reviewing the animal program for the utilization of animals in research at least once every six months. The committee meets biannually to make this determination.
- Reviewing and approving, requiring modifications to, or withholding approval to animal care and use protocols. Protocols and modifications made throughout the year are reviewed through the designated member review process.
- Reviewing and investigating legitimate concerns involving the care and use of laboratory animals resulting from public, employee, or student complaints. Serious or continuing noncompliance must be reported to the appropriate agency.
- Suspending an activity involving animals if noncompliance is verified; taking corrective action and reporting noncompliance to funding agencies.
The Brooklyn College IACUC serves as a resource to faculty, investigators, technicians, students, staff, and administrators, providing guidance in fulfilling the obligation to plan and conduct all animal use procedures with the highest scientific, humane, and ethical principles.
