Updates on Commencement and Spring Events
April 26, 2022
Dear students, staff, and faculty,
I hope everyone had a relaxing spring break and is recharged for the final weeks of this semester.
I want to begin by congratulating the School of Humanities & Social Sciences on its second annual HSS Expo showcasing the work of its outstanding students yesterday and today. I hope that many of you were able to join those events as well as the Brooklyn College Cancer Center’s first Health and Wellness Fair held today on the West Quad.
As you know, on May 31, we are hosting an in-person Commencement at Barclays Center. I am excited to announce the Class of 2022 Valedictorian Carina D’Urso and Salutatorian Hafsa Fatima. Carina is a Macaulay Honors College student graduating with a B.A. in Arts, Education, and Social Change. Hafsa, also a Macaulay Honors student, is graduating with a B.S in Psychology and a B.A. in Art. Congratulations to these two wonderful Brooklyn College students.
I’d also like to recognize graduating student Nickolas Khimerik, an anthropology and history major with a double minor in Russian and religion, who was just named a Fulbright Scholar. He will travel to Moldova to teach English and hone his skills as a cultural ambassador. I encourage all graduating students to participate in our 2022 Commencement, and I encourage faculty and staff to volunteer to help during the celebration.
Tonight, I will join a delegation of CUNY college presidents, led by Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, to Israel for a study tour. There, we will visit Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Jaffa, and the Palestinian city of Ramallah. We will meet with Israeli and Palestinian academics, elected officials, and leaders of civil society. The “Scholars as Bridge Builders” trip is a partnership between the Office of the CUNY Chancellor and the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York. The centerpiece of the study tour will be visits to three colleges to speak with Jewish and Arab students, faculty, and administrators about their higher educational system. I look forward to hearing directly from both Israelis and Palestinians about their lives and their experiences.
Summer is right around the corner, and I encourage all continuing students to register for online or in-person classes. Summer is an excellent time to catch up on credits, get a seat in high-demand courses, and stay on track to graduation.
Finally, if you are not graduating this year and would like to watch our beautiful commencement ceremonies online, you can watch the festivities on our Commencement homepage on May 31 at 9 a.m.
Stay safe, and I look forward to seeing you soon.
