Important Upcoming Dates and Events
March 28, 2022
Dear students, staff, and faculty,
I hope you are doing well as we close out the month of March. We are now seeing more academic and social events happening on campus, and more invited guests as well. It is wonderful to see the campus coming back to its vitality. April is filled with exciting programs and events, a few of which I will highlight here.
1. Fall Registration Begins April 4
On April 4, registration for the Fall 2022 semester will begin. The Registrar’s Office is offering a series of registration support sessions. Please check them out and sign up. Or visit virtual offices hours with the Registrar, M–F, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also, students can register for high demand summer courses right now. Most summer classes are online, and it’s a great time to get three credits in just six weeks.
2. Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee Visits April 8
On April 8, at 11 a.m. in the Tanger Auditorium, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee will give a talk about her life and activism. She is the Liberian activist whose leadership of the nonviolent women’s peace movement played a pivotal role in ending Liberia’s 14-year civil war. Livestream will be available on the Brooklyn College YouTube page.
3. College Hosts COVID-19 Memorial on April 14
On April 14, at 12:30 pm. on the West Quad, we will gather to commemorate the people in the Brooklyn College community lost to COVID-19. We want to honor their lives and acknowledge how devastating our losses have been. Many in the college community also lost family and friends, whose lives we will also recognize together.
4. Campus Jobs for Students Are Available Now
As the campus is fully operational, work study and part-time CA jobs are now available on campus that provide students with financial support. To find a student job opening, review the instructions for HireBC on our website or contact the Magner Career Center at careernews@brooklyn.cuny.edu. Offices with available positions are encouraged to post on HireBC.
5. Commuting To and From Campus
Our Public Safety Office provides students, staff, and faculty escort services to public transportation or a car at night. Requests for escort services should be made at least 20 minutes in advance by calling 718.951.5511. For those who are interested in carpooling to and from campus, you may want to use the ridesharing program at 511NYRideshare.org. We are working with The Women’s Center this semester to host a self-defense class specifically to address personal safety concerns.
6. Mental Health Counseling Resources
The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone. If you are a student struggling for any reason, you can get free and confidential personal counseling sessions by sending an email to BCPersonalCounseling@gmail.com. If you are a staff or faculty member struggling, please consult the CUNY Work/Life Program for support.
Finally, as always, if you are feeling physically sick, please do not come to campus. We need to remain vigilant in keeping our campus community healthy because we are not out of the pandemic yet. Also, please note that Ramadan begins Friday, April 1. Please be considerate toward Muslim students, staff, and faculty who may be fasting this month and accommodate them as needed. Thank you.
I am hoping for a healthy and happy spring, and I wish you all the best.
Yours truly,
Michelle J. Anderson
President, Brooklyn College
