WGST Women’s Leadership Initiative
As our society moves toward acknowledging the diversity of the world we live in, Women’s and Gender Studies is uniquely well-suited to prepare students to become informed and engaged citizens. Graduates of our program are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to be successful proponents of equality and social justice in their careers of choice.
Talk of "influencers" leaves out many of you who are making history day-by-day. WGST celebrates your presence and recognizes your leadership before graduation. Here is a chance for you to demonstrate leadership skills in a community of your choice. The WGST Women's Leadership Initiative is open to current WGST students carrying out a neighborhood project to be covered by at least $250 to $350. The project should be completed by April 2021.
Below are some of the initiatives, on a first-come first-served basis, WGST will fund for student-led community events of between $250 and $300 that involve at least 10 participants. The 15 or so events a year can be, but are not limited to:
- Library visits and lunch for school-age children
- Gathering of new mothers in the neighborhood/religious group (church, mosque, synagogue, temple, etc.)
- Neighborhood walk
- School visit as guest speaker when we are back in person
- Book distribution at a reading
- Neighborhood clean-up
- BC campus and library visit
- Art day
- Gathering of seniors in the neighborhoods or hold event at a nearby and accessible nursing home
Again, the culminating events would be publicized on our WGST website to cover the following details:
- Brief bio of you
- Rationale for choice of project
- Participants and insights
- Links to images and videos documenting the project
- Postgraduate plans
