HSS Highlights
Each year at the annual Faculty Day event, numerous awards are given to outstanding faculty members. This year, half of all the awards were presented to HSS faculty. The award for Excellence in Teaching for a Part-Time Faculty Member went to Aleah Ranjitsingh of the Africana Studies Department. Ranjitsingh is a graduate of the Brooklyn College Political Science Department who earned her Ph.D. from the University of the West Indies and teaches courses in the Caribbean Studies Program. The award for Excellence in Creative Achievement went to Celina Su of the Political Science Department. Professor Su is not only an expert in participatory democracy and civic engagement, especially in local politics, but she is a published poet who has authored numerous works of poetry and fiction. The award for Excellence in Research went to Mark Ungar, also of the Political Science Department, who has written and edited four books and more than 30 articles on the theory and practice of human rights in Latin America. The Eric M. Steinberg Award for College Citizenship was awarded to Prudence Cumberbatch, chair of the Africana Studies Department and a faculty member who exemplifies dedicated and invaluable service to Brooklyn College. And finally, four out of five of the 2019 Tow Professorships were awarded to HSS faculty. The Tow Award of $10,000 each (to be used for academic expenses) was established through a generous gift from Leonard Tow '50, in honor of his wife, Claire, a member of the Class of 1952. These awards are made every year to full-time faculty who have demonstrated outstanding teaching effectiveness, mastery and creative application of pedagogic techniques, and dedication to helping students achieve the highest academic standards. The 2019 awardees are Jocelyn Wills, History; Christopher Ebert, History; Karen Stern, History; and Mark Ungar, Political Science. Congratulations to all our awardees.
