Message From the Dean
Dear School of Humanities and Social Science colleagues,
I hope that your semester is going well. It's an exciting time to be part of Brooklyn College's School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). HSS is the intellectual hub of the college, and the center for cutting-edge interdisciplinary research and teaching rooted in strong disciplines. We are the stewards of the fundamental core of what it means to be a college-educated citizen. We face numerous challenges locally, nationally, and globally as we advocate for the centrality of the humanities and social sciences in higher education. We all need to work together to increase the public visibility of our intellectual work, expand our resource base, and reach more students. A focus for us this academic year is to increase awareness of the many rewarding career paths associated with the humanities and social sciences, emphasizing the importance of critical thinking, effective communication, and analytical skills in preparing our students to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing economy, society, culture, and environment.
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences continues to lead Brooklyn College in faculty diversity. This semester we welcomed four new full-time, tenure-track faculty to our school: Assistant Professor Meital Avivi Reich in Communication Arts, Sciences, and Disorders; Madelon Leventhal Rand Endowed Chair in Literature Mónica De La Torre in English; Assistant Professor Simanique Moody in Lingusitics/English; and Assistant Professor Carla Santamaría in Puerto Rican and Latino Studies. Please welcome them to our community.
In addition to these new faces, we have some familiar faces taking on new leadership roles this semester. Professor Lynda Day is serving as the School of Humanities and Social Sciences dean's faculty associate. Associate Professor Alan Aja is chair of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies, Associate Professor David Brodsky is chair of Judaic Studies, Professor Manny Ness is acting chair of Political Science, Associate Professor Emily Molina is directing the Center for the Study of Brooklyn, and Assistant Professor Maddie Fox is directing the Center for Teaching and Learning. We would also like to thank the outgoing chairs and directors for their service.
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is upping its social media game this academic year. If you have an event, publication, performance, or student achievement you would like to publicize, send an e-mail. Martin Garcia, our HSS social media director, will promote it on HSS Twitter and HSS Instagram. Please follow us!
Let me know how my office can further support your efforts to continue to strengthen the School of Humanities and Social Sciences' reputation for excellent scholarship, earnest public engagement, and innovative teaching.
Thanks,
Ken
