M.F.A. Sonic Arts, Class of 2021
I chose to attend Brooklyn College because of the Sonic Arts program. I was considering getting a master's degree in viola performance, however, while researching various programs I discovered the Sonic Arts program on the BC website -- I immediately knew that it was the program I was looking for.
Although I'm not finished with the degree, I believe it's setting me up for success in a few ways. First, it's given me thorough education and training in important aspects of music technology and composition. Secondly, it's shown me that if I apply consistent and determined efforts I can achieve great results.
I took an entry-level course with Professor Geers my first semester called Building Electronic Music Instruments. For my final project, I decided to attempt an ambitious project of building an electronic viola. Professor Geers, in his broad-mindedness, not only allowed me to proceed with the project, but was very supportive. Although I wasn't able to complete a working version of the instrument by the end of the course, we continued to work on the project as an independent study the next three semesters. The instrument has surpassed all my expectations. Recently, a piece I composed for the electronic viola was accepted into a music festival hosted by Indiana University-Purdue University.
Years ago I had considered getting a master’s degree, however, most programs at the time focused either on audio recording or a western approach to music composition but lacked the multidisciplinary focus needed for an electronic musician. Unique in its multifaceted approach, the Sonic Arts program provides a nurturing environment for composing electronic music. Beyond this, the diverse experience of the faculty can support composers influenced by the popular angle of electronic music as well as the academic lineage.
We have a wonderful, friendly community in the Sonic Arts program. Everyone is so supportive. I've made many new friends, all of whom I've learned from musically. We all have such different backgrounds and that leads to very enriching exchanges and connections. The faculty is also very supportive. It's so clear how much they've invested in the students and the program and continue to do so.
For incoming graduate students to the Sonic Arts program, my advice would be to be ambitious! Come into the Sonic Arts program with the determination to place your personal artistic path on a trajectory of success. There is so much support, knowledge and inspiration available to you, that with that sort of determination, you will definitely achieve great results.
