Supporting Documents
Transcripts
Applicants can upload unofficial transcripts when they submit their application. Admitted students must submit official transcripts. Transcripts must be mailed to the Office of Graduate Admissions. A transcript is required from each college or university attended for academic credit, showing all courses, grades, and degrees received (if any). Transcripts must be official. An official transcript is sent directly to Brooklyn College from your prior institutions either via mail or electronically to graddocs@brooklyn.cuny.edu. You may also hand-deliver, in a sealed envelope, a transcript which your school has provided for you.
Applicants who completed academic credits at the City University of New York (CUNY) since 2003 are not required to send a transcript, as the Office of Graduate Admissions is able to obtain transcripts internally. However, transcripts are required for any course work completed at a CUNY college before 2003, and for any academic credit completed at other colleges and universities.
International Transcript Credential Evaluation
International transcripts must be evaluated by a professional agency recognized by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. Evaluations must include course-by-course analysis indicating the type of degree received, the U.S. equivalency of the degree, the graduation date, and a cumulative grade point average. This will help us understand your educational background and academic credentials. Allow plenty of time between the evaluation and the application deadline, especially if you are currently residing outside of the United States and require a student visa.
English Language Proficiency
If you received your baccalaureate (undergraduate) degree or master's (graduate) degree from a country where English is not the sole official language, you must submit an official score from TOEFL, IELTS, Pearson, or Duolingo. To be considered official, scores must be sent directly from the testing administrator and have been taken within the past two years. We only accept TOEFL or IELTS scores that are sent electronically by your test location. Our ETS Institution code is 2046. If submitting Pearson or Duolingo, ask them to send the scores electronically to Brooklyn College CUNY Graduate Admissions.

- If your recommender does not receive the e-mail, please advise them to check their e-mail spam folder.

How to Get a Good Letter of Recommendation
- The best letter writers are those that know you well and can provide an evaluation of your ability to perform and succeed at the graduate level. Choose someone who knows you well, who is a professor who has evaluated your academic work or a professional with an advanced degree who has supervised you in a job or internship. Recommendations written by family members or friends are not appropriate.
- Contact the person and be prepared to articulate your interest and reasons for attending graduate school. Letters of recommendation are written strictly on a voluntary basis. The best approach is to ask potential letter writers if they are willing to write you a strong letter.
- You can help your letter writers write good letters by giving each of them a copy of your résumé and a draft of your personal statement. It can also be helpful to jog their memories about you. For example, remind them about a class paper you worked on or a project that you completed.
- Letters should include a description of how long the recommender has known the candidate and in what capacity, a candidate's knowledge of the program and subject matter, specific accomplishments and projects, how the candidate compares to others in the field, and relevant professional experience.
- Thank your recommenders after they have submitted their recommendation.
