Planning Your Religion Program
Here is some information about course rotations that can help you plan your Religion major or minor! Please note that, for the most accurate information about when a course will be offered, double check with either the director of the Religion program, the professor offering the course in question, or the home department of the course in question. Still, this should help you anticipate roughly when courses will be offered in the future
Rotation of Introductory Survey Courses
- RELG 3003 Questions of Text and Truth: Introduction to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam (twice per year, and sometimes in the summer)
- RELG 3005 Religions of India, China and Japan (once / year, most recently in Fall 2021, often offered by Prof. Meyer in History)
- CLAS 3237 / HIST 3310 Ancient Mediterranean Religions (every other year or every third year, usually offered by Prof. Sowers in Classics)
Rotation of Methodology Courses
- ANTH 3185 Anthropology of Religion (on a three semester rotation, most recently in Fall 2021, consult with Anthropology for more details)
- PHIL 3730 Philosophy of Religion (on a three semester rotation, most recently in Spring 2021, usually offered by Prof. Arlig in Philosophy)
- SOCY 2700 Sociology of Religion (once / year, most recently in Fall 2021, usually offered by Prof. St. Paul or Prof. Shortell in Sociology)
Rotation of Upper Divison Courses
- HIST 4001 Colloquium in the History of Religion (once / year)
- PHIL 4105 Seminar in the Problems of Philosophy (once / year)
- CLAS 4012 to be offered every third or fourth semester
- RELG 4001 to be offered once we have enough Religion majors to fill it (we will rely on HIST 4001 for the foreseeable future)
Projected Rotation of Elective Religion Courses
At Least Once a Year
- AFST 3101 / HIST 3560 Africa to 1800 (usually by Prof. Day/AFST)
- RELG 3030 / CLAS 3200 Heroes/Gods/Monsters (Pathways; usually multiple sections in the fall and spring semesters)
- RELG 3006 / HIST 3317 Shaping the Islamic World (hopefully next in Spring 2022)
- PHIL 3722 Asian Philosophy (usually by Prof. Trivedi/Philosophy)
At Least Once Every Two Years
- CLAS 3238 / WGST 3710 Gender and the Body in Ancient Religions (usually by Prof. Sowers/Classics)
- CLAS 3241 / RELG 3041 Magic in the Ancient World (usually by Prof. Sowers/Classics)
- CLAS 3244 / RELG 3035 / HIST 3025 Death and Afterlife in Ancient History (usually by Prof. Stern/History, likely next in Spring 2023)
- HIST 3030 Ancient Egypt
- HIST 3033 / RELG 3024 Medieval Christianity (usually by Prof. Mancia/History, likely next in fall 2023)
- HIST 3044 / RELG 3025 Religious Change in Early Modern Europe (usually by Prof. Mancia/History, likely next in spring 2024)
- HIST 3350 The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict (usually by Prof. Fishman/History)
- HIST 3550 History of the Middle East in the Twentieth Century (usually by Prof. Fishman/History)
