Students can declare the communication major using e-services on the Brooklyn College WebCentral Portal.
What prerequisites are needed before taking upper-level communication courses?
Students must complete COMM 1001 (cross-listed with SPEC 1205) with a grade of C or higher before they are permitted to enroll in the following upper-level communication courses: COMM 3000, COMM 3100, COMM 3200, COMM 3300, and COMM 3150W.

How do I register for either of the required communication internship courses (COMM 4000 / COMM 4100)?
In order to register for either internship course, a student must: (a) be a senior, (b) contact the Communication Program director to arrange a one-on-one meeting in order to prove that the internship has been obtained. Proof can be demonstrated by having a formal, hard copy letter prepared by the immediate supervisor at the internship site. The hard copy letter should be given to the Communication Program director, 3439 Boylan Hall, during the one-on-one meeting. The letter should be prepared on official company letterhead (such as in this example), and (c) obtain a permission code from the Communication Program director to register for the internship course on CUNYfirst. All internships must be approved by the Communication Program director, before they can begin, in order for students to receive credit.
What is the difference between the communication internship courses COMM 4000 and COMM 4100?
COMM 4000 is worth two credits, and students work roughly 14 hours per week at the internship site. COMM 4100 is worth three credits and students work roughly 20 hours per week at the internship site.
How can I register for a course that is closed?
In order to register for a course that is closed, students must request an override from the professor of the course. If the professor grants the request, then the student can register for the course. If the request is denied, then the student must wait until the following semester to attempt to sign up. A student should not contact the director of the Communication Program for an override into a closed course.
I need help finding an internship. Where can I seek assistance?
The Magner Career Center is a valuable resource for students at Brooklyn College because its representatives assist students in connecting their college experience with a relevant internship and/or career opportunity. Students are entreated to become proactive in their internship and/or career planning by taking full advantage of the comprehensive list of career services (e.g., company visits, career panels) offered by the center. It's never too early to start preparing for your internship and/or career. Students should make an appointment, as soon as possible, to meet with a Magner Career Center representative for assistance in formulating a solid internship plan. The representative will be able to help students narrow down a list of internship possibilities within the communication field.
