Gardening Research Internship Opportunity

Project Description
The Department of Health and Nutrition Sciences is embarking on new research activities that will explore the dietary quality and micronutrient contents of plant foods and herbs grown in different indoor growing systems, such as soil-based, hydroponics, aquaponics, permaponics, and compost.
Primary Responsibilities
Student research interns will oversee overall project work and maintain everyday operations of the growing lab, planning of activities, documentation, and background research. As part of a collaborative research team you will develop new project initiatives for the greenhouse.
Specific Duties
- Conduct background research and compile annotated bibliographies.
- Participate in regular maintenance of growing lab/greenhouse operations, including seeding, watering, transplanting, and general plant care.
- Measuring pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels of water-based systems.
- Participate in training and online self-study.
- Participate in team meetings.
- Potential participation in writing, conference presentation, and publication of findings.
Qualifications
- Graduate or undergraduate student pursuing a degree in public health, health sciences, nutrition or related fields
- Self-starter with good organization skills
- Great communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work well with diverse groups of people
- At least one to two years of experience with gardening or farming
- Comfortable handling decaying/compostable plant matter, worms, and soil
- Generally flexible hours, with at least four hours per week to devote to the project
