Critical Systems Science: Developing an Applied and Participatory Methodology in Urban (Agro) Ecology Research
with Dr. Perl Egendorf, Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY
Tuesday, November 9
4:15-5 p.m.
Physical scientists are becoming increasingly attuned to the ways in which social inequities, specifically systemic racism, impact the form and functioning of ecosystems, particularly in urban environments. Amidst calls to “do research differently” what approaches can Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, and Mathematics researchers (STEAM) draw upon? In this talk, Dr. Egendorf will elucidate a research framework she developed for engaging with systemic environmental justice issues, illustrated through the case of lead (Pb) in soil. She will conclude with examples of applied and participatory applications of this framework that focus on addressing the needs and interests of urban agriculture practitioners in New York City.
