Message From the Chair of Anthropology
June 4, 2019
Congratulations to our graduates and all our students on a successful semester and academic year! We are so proud of all our graduating anthropology majors, minors, and students we've been lucky enough to have in our courses. Some are going on to medical school, others to graduate programs, exciting jobs, or simply the next adventure. Keep in touch as you take your anthropological knowledge and experiences out into the world.
The department celebrated our students at an end-of-the-year party on May 14, where we also announced and gave out two awards and two scholarships.
Every year, the department gives out two awards to graduating seniors in recognition of their academic and applied work. The Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Anthropology went to Andrew Kim. The Award for Engaged Anthropology went to Anumta Raheel. Congratulations, Andrew and Anumta!
The department also gives two Freed Foundation Scholarships every year to students in their sophomore or early junior year to support their ongoing excellent academic work. The two scholarships for 2019–20 will go to Denille Samuel and Carly Graham. Congratulations, Denille and Carly! We look forward to your continued excellence in the year to come!

The department also honored our graduating seniors as they presented their senior thesis projects over three days in May, culminating in an all-day event on May 22. Students presented on topics as diverse as refugee camp life in Jordan, decolonizing approaches to anthropological knowledge in museums in New York, policing on Roosevelt Island, digital archiving in museums, and the possibilities of Neanderthal language use.
