Theater
The world is your stage.
The Department of Theater provides you with the kind of comprehensive experience you'll need to thrive in the theater world. You will receive expert coaching in acting, voice, movement, improvisation, and stage combat. You'll have the opportunity to direct, and you will learn stagecraft and design, costume design, lighting design, stage management, performing arts management, and world theater history. Because we are in New York City, with faculty who have access to some of the best theater companies in the world, you'll work with such prestigious organizations as the Manhattan Theatre Club, the New York Shakespeare Festival, Playwrights Horizons, and SoHo Rep. By the time you graduate, you'll have the tools to compete—and flourish—in the theatrical community.
Realize a life in the theater.
The Department of Theater provides talented students with the artistic and intellectual foundation necessary to succeed on stage or behind the curtain. You will receive rigorous training in acting, design, and directing, with many performance opportunities to sharpen your expertise. Our performing arts management program is considered one of the strongest in the country, and our program in theater history and criticism will give you a thorough grounding in scholarship, dramaturgy, and theatrical criticism. Our faculty—active members of the theater community across the country—will mentor you and guide you to important internship and networking opportunities, including at Soho Rep, Playwrights Horizon, Ford's Theater, HBO, and more. You will graduate with the training, contacts, and confidence you'll need to flourish in the theater world.
