Global and Contemporary Jazz Studies
Applicants must be prepared to play and solo over the following 5 pieces:
- Footprints by Wayne Shorter (played more upbeat at quarter note = approximately 180 to demonstrate straight-8th playing in a Latin-inspired context over an altered blues)
- Epistrophy by Thelonious Monk (swung 8ths)
- the ballad Goodbye Pork Pie Hat by Charles Mingus
- a free improv improvisation (to be performed with Prof. D.D. Jackson)
- an original composition (or re-imagining of an existing composition) that best exemplifies the applicant’s current, overall conceptual approach (doesn’t have to necessarily involve improvisation)
Applicants will also potentially be asked to demonstrate their capabilities in the following:
- Sight reading
- Chord identification
- Ear training
