Mission Statement of the DRD Speech-Language Hearing Center at Brooklyn College

Established in 1931, the Diana Rogovin Davidow Speech Language Hearing Center at Brooklyn College provides diagnostic and therapeutic speech, language and hearing services to individuals across the lifespan, including students, faculty, staff and residents from Brooklyn and beyond.  The Center serves as an experiential learning resource for students from diverse communities, including those enrolled in the B.A. Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders, the M.S. Program in Speech-Language Pathology, and the CUNY Au.D Doctor of Audiology Program.  Students engage in a variety of activities including observation, classroom laboratory activities, research and service provision under the supervision of licensed speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

As part of the Brooklyn College Department of Communication Arts, Sciences, and Disorders, students are prepared to be exemplary communicators, to understand the foundations of human communication, to recognize disorder, to distinguish disorder from difference, and to prevent disorder when possible. Our mission includes service to the college and community through activities which expand the horizons of our knowledge, which enable communication to succeed when it is ineffective, and which ennoble human discourse.

Five-Year Vision and Strategic Plan of the DRDSLHC 2019-2024

The Diana Rogovin Davidow Speech Language Hearing Center at Brooklyn College will serve as a center of excellence and innovative clinical speech, language, hearing and swallowing service for individuals across the lifespan, including students, faculty, staff and residents from Brooklyn and beyond. Our goals are to provide experiential learning activities for the affiliated BA, MS, and AuD programs, and to serve as a valued community resource.

Goal 1: Maintain clinical education opportunities for a variety of academic programs.  Expand clinical opportunities when needed.

A. Work with faculty and staff of B.A. Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders to ensure access to clinical supports.

B. Work with faculty and staff of M.S. Program in Speech-Language Pathology to assure a variety of clinic experiential learning activities to fulfill ASHA CAA accreditation standards and prepare students to be eligible for NYS licensure in SLP and national certification.

C. Work with faculty and staff of CUNY Doctoral (Au.D.) Program in Audiology to assure a variety of clinic experiential learning activities to fulfill ASHA CAA accreditation standards and prepare students to be eligible for NYS licensure in audiology and national certification.

D. Work with various programs within Brooklyn College and CUNY to facilitate interprofessional education by creating and maintaining interprofessional practice activities.

Goal 2: Increase outreach and visibility at the community levels; advance commitment to serve the community and college needs while maintaining a commitment to ethical conduct and evidence-based practice.

A. Within the college community, emphasize Center activities through research, education, community engagement, and outreach activities.

B. Broaden clinical activities to include a wide variety of clients, including those from underrepresented and underserved groups, and to individuals throughout the lifespan.

C. Provide community events to diversify client caseload when indicated.

D. Provide continuing education opportunities for faculty and alumni.

E. Work with offices across Brooklyn College to raise awareness and to foster health and wellness.

Goal 3: Expand financial support through public and private funding to support various academic and clinical training initiatives, and faculty and student research endeavors.

A. In concert with Department of CASD and BC Foundation initiatives, continue efforts in alumni fundraising to support scholarships as well as various clinical training initiatives.

B. Pursue external funding initiatives to fund clinical equipment and training activities.
