Guidance/Requirements on In-Person/Partial Remote Internships
COVID-19 guidance/requirements are changing as the circumstances surrounding it evolve. For current COVID-19 guidance please visit CUNY's COVID-19 requirements/guidance. If a student is receiving course credit or a stipend from Brooklyn College and will be interning in person, they will need to email intern@brooklyn.cuny.edu for further guidance/requirements.
By posting a job or internship on our site or recruiting at Brooklyn College, you are agreeing to the Magner Career Center's Terms of Use for Employers.
The Magner Career Center acts only as an intermediary between employers posting job opportunities and candidates searching for job opportunities. As a result, we have no control over the quality, safety, or legality of the jobs or résumés posted, the accuracy of the listings, the ability of employers to offer job opportunities to candidates, or the ability of candidates to fill job openings. Because user authentication on the Internet is difficult, the Magner Center does not confirm that each user is who they claim to be. Because we cannot control the behavior of participants on our website, in the event that you have a dispute with one or more users, you release the Magner Center and Brooklyn College (and our agents and employees) from claims, demands, and damages arising out of or in any way connected with such disputes.
We shall not accept any job listings deemed personal, this includes but not limited to housekeeping, babysitting, car-sharing services, etc. Any suspicion of this behavior, will result in the right to decline and deny access at any time without notice.
Finally, we expect that you will use caution when using our job/internship posting system. The Magner Career Center makes no representations about the accuracy, reliability, or timeliness of the website or the material. The use of the system is at your own risk.
Review and Approval for Posting
The Magner Career Center reviews all job and internship postings for approval and inclusion into the HireBC system. We reserve the right to not post a position that does not meet our expectations. The reasons a posting can be declined are the following: email address is not a company domain, company website does not seem legitimate, residential location is not permitted, the position is commission based, etc.
Accuracy of Job Description
Employers are responsible for ensuring that their job or internship description is an accurate reflection of the duties of an employee.
Internships
Quality internships provide students with experiences that complement their education. Our internship employer toolkit contains various materials that will help prospective employers develop an internship that is mutually beneficial. All employers are asked to review the material, which contains best practices, our employer guidelines, and other helpful material.
We understand that in the challenging economy, many organizations rely on the support of unpaid interns. Before posting an unpaid internship, we ask that you confirm that your position complies with the following guidelines from the Department of Labor.
In order to post an unpaid position, the internship must encompass all six components below:
- The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training that would be given in an educational environment.
- The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern.
- The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff.
- The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern, and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded.
- The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship.
- The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship.
Recruitment Events
The Magner Career Center reserves the right to prevent the participation or limit access of corporations and representatives whenever, in its judgement, conditions warrant, or if it deems it necessary for the comfort, convenience, or safety of our student participants. Limitations to participation may be based upon, but are not limited to, the charging of upfront fees, not adhering to the Department of Labor employment/internships guidelines, not providing safe and legitimate working environments, or based upon multiple negative student reviews. The center also reserves the right to cancel any event, to decline to accept any organizational representation as a participant in an event, or to require any participant to withdraw from an event at any time when such action is determined by staff to be in the best interests of the general welfare of the event group or of the individual participant.
Discriminatory Practices
Federal laws prohibit job discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin, religion, age, equal pay, and disability. These guidelines are available from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In addition, the New York City Human Rights Law prohibits discrimination based on gender (including gender identity and sexual harassment), sexual orientation, marital status, and partnership status. The Magner Career Center will not post positions that do not adhere to any of these nondiscriminatory guidelines.
Safety
Employers will offer students a safe and appropriate work environment for students. In most cases, a private home usually is not considered appropriate for internships.
Sexual Harassment
Employers will not engage in sexual harassment as prohibited by CUNY Equal Opportunity, Non-Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Policy.
Deadlines on Accepting Positions
Employers should allow students at least 24 hours to decide on whether to accept a job or internship. Positions recruited through on-campus recruiting have other deadline rules.
Third-party Staffing
If appropriate, the Magner Career Center allows positions from third-party staffing agencies to be posted online.
Upfront Costs or Required Activities
We will not post positions requiring students to pay special fees, purchase training materials, or participate in multi-level marketing as a preliminary condition of employment.
Payment of Wages
Employers will pay wages to students as agreed upon and as stipulated by the New York State Department of Labor. Commission-only based positions will not be approved.
