Application Guidelines
Every year, Brooklyn College offers scholarships, awards, and prizes to students who have outstanding records. This is made possible through the generosity of alumni and friends of the college, including the trustees of the Brooklyn College Foundation, Inc., who have helped promote the college's continuing scholastic excellence by establishing various funds. These funds generate more than $1 million in interest annually, which supports the education of qualified students.
This application is only for nondepartmental undergraduate scholarships, awards, and prizes and will be evaluated by scholarship committees. For scholarships, awards, and prizes administered by academic departments, consult with the specific department about its selection process.
Scholarship and award amounts vary. They range from partial to full tuition for the academic year. Scholarships and awards are subject to financial availability. The college reserves the right to reduce or rescind the scholarship or award if financial circumstances dictate.
Scholarships may not be deferred. The recipients must use the scholarship and/or award in the year it is given.
Who Is Eligible?
Undergraduate students entering or currently in a degree program may apply for scholarships and awards. All recipients must be in good academic standing with a minimum grade point average of 2.00 for continuing undergraduate students.
CUNY employees receiving a tuition waver are not eligible for Brooklyn College Foundation scholarships.
How Do I Apply?
To be considered for a general undergraduate scholarship (a scholarship that is not administered by an academic department), you must take the following steps:
- Complete an online application.
- File a FAFSA by February 9, 2023.
What Are the Criteria for Awarding Scholarships, Awards, and Prizes?
Applications will be evaluated by scholarship committees. Information about specific scholarships and awards is available on the Brooklyn College Office of Scholarships website. Criteria established by donors are the primary guidelines for determining recipients.
In addition to the donor requirements, scholarship applications will be evaluated based on academic achievement as well as school involvement, community service, or volunteer activities, and demonstrated leadership. Accomplishment in your field of study and your unique goals may also be considered. Recipients should be excellent role models for other Brooklyn College students.
How Will I Be Notified?
If the application has been successfully submitted electronically, you will receive an e-mail notification. If you do not receive an e-mail notification, then there is a submission problem, and the applicant should contact the Office of Scholarships.
It is the student's responsibility to supply all the requested information, personal statement, transcripts, and recommendations. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Applicants will be notified of decisions by e-mail in July. The reasons for committee decisions cannot be given. Practically speaking, it is impossible to explain why a particular candidate is not selected, since every applicant is judged by the committee in relation to the funds available and to the other candidates applying for the same scholarship. Committee members review all applications with great care and are scrupulously fair in their evaluations and recommendations. Committee decisions are final.
All recipients must submit a letter of acknowledgment to the donors in order for scholarships and awards to be processed.
