Admissions
Application deadlines for the M.A. English program are May 1 for the fall semester and November 15 for the spring semester. For the M.A. English Education program, they are July 15 for the fall semester and November 15 for the spring semester. Applications submitted after these dates will be considered as openings occur.
Applicants to both programs must meet Brooklyn College requirements for admission to the Division of Graduate Studies; they must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and have completed an approved undergraduate program of study—including at least 15 credits in advanced courses in English—with a minimum average of B. These should be literature courses beyond "general education" requirements at the applicant's college.
Applicants whose native language is not English are required to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 650 on the paper test, or 280 on the computer-based test, or 114 on the Internet-based test. The equivalent minimum score for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is 8.5.
Applicants are required to submit the online application and request submission of official transcripts and two letters of recommendation. In addition, the following materials must be uploaded to the online application:
- Applicants to the M.A. English program must submit a sample of critical writing of about 10 pages, and a two-page statement of academic purpose. The sample of critical writing will typically consist of undergraduate writing (e.g., a paper, or two shorter papers) on literary topics.
- Applicants to the M.A. English Education program must submit a résumé and a brief biographical statement of 500 to 1,000 words describing their reasons for pursuing the program. Those who already have initial state certification must attach a photocopy of their New York State or other state teaching certificate.
Again, all materials should be uploaded through the online application.
