Television, Radio & Emerging Media
We make the future in real time.
Whether you're in front of a microphone, behind a camera, calling the shots in master control, creating content and sharing it on social media or navigating a virtual world in a headset – the current media environment is a multiplatform converged space of amazing potential and opportunity. Our highly regarded programs are the gateway to current media jobs—and gigs in media platforms and careers yet to be created. Hands-on experience is crucial, and we make sure you'll have all that you need by the time you graduate as well as a strong grounding in the study of the media industries, institutions, audiences, ethics and regulations. Our accomplished and dedicated faculty of scholar-practitioners teach the theory and practice of state-of-the-art digital technologies in our Emerging Media Innovation Lab which includes a multicam television streaming studio, a VR/Multimedia Lab and a video newscast set.
Our Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Television and Radio offers a wide-ranging series of courses to help students innovate and professionalize across platforms and media of their choice—radio, podcasting, television, streaming, virtual reality, immersive video and code- and time-based media. Students gain introductory experience in all of them and then specialize and innovate in the one(s) that capture their imaginations and passions.
Our Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Journalism and Media Studies gives JAMS students reporting and newswriting and making experience across all platforms leading to a portfolio class of polished work in several specialties—a calling card for your first job or continued study at a graduate J School.
Students in both degree programs produce work that airs on WBCR Radio, our student-run radio station, streams live and archives to our YouTube channel, publishes to the Brooklyn News Service and work that distributes across our social media channels. The Department of TV, Radio & Emerging Media also serves the greater Brooklyn College community through our TREM Multicamera Crew—students and recent alums who produce, direct, shoot and stream events such as Brooklyn College’s Comeback Commencement and COVID Memorial Service.
Minors in Journalism and TV and Radio provide opportunities for specialized media study through a smaller number of courses in the department—excellent for students of all majors with an interest in TV, radio, emerging media and journalism.
