Gregory Lamar
Adjunct Associate Professor, Voice
Internationally renowned voice teacher Gregory Lamar has helped to shape the voices and careers of singers for almost 30 years. His masterful teaching and knowledge of the voice have inspired singers around the world. Lamar's students have performed in all of the major opera houses and concert venues, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Vienna Staatsoper, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Bayerische Staatsoper München, Opéra Bastille, La Scala, Covent Garden, Carnegie Hall, and the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals.
Lamar is a guest voice teacher for the opera studio programs of both the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and Komische Oper in Berlin. He has been a guest voice teacher at the Royal Danish Opera and Danish Actors' Association in Copenhagen. He was a vocal consultant to Thea Dispeker Artists' Management and collaborates regularly with other artists' management agencies in the United States and Europe. He is the casting adviser for the Copenhagen Opera Festival and was casting and vocal consultant at Malmö Opera in Sweden.
Many of Lamar's students have performed in musical theater on Broadway, national and international tours, and in film and television. His students are also teaching at various conservatories and universities throughout the United States and Europe. He has collaborated with noted voice specialists in working with injured voices and has conducted master classes in voice and speech for actors in the United States and Germany. He has served as an adjudicator for various competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera Auditions.
Lamar has been a member of the faculties of Montclair State University and New School University (The Actors' Studio Drama School, MFA Program). He maintains private voice studios in New York City, Berlin, and Copenhagen.
As a performer, Lamar was noted for his wide-ranging baritone, artistry, and versatility. He received a bachelor of music degree from the University of Georgia and a master of music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and did postgraduate work at Indiana University.
