Brian J. Wagner-Yeung is the Special Learners chair to NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association). He received his BA and MSED in Music Education from CUNY Queens College, and an advanced certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders from CUNY Brooklyn College. He is a classically trained cellist, and has played regularly in the NYC area. He currently teaches special education music in South Brooklyn for the New York City Department of Education. He has taught students on the elementary, middle school, and high school level - where he has mainly worked with students on the autism spectrum or with intellectual disabilities, in addition to students who are gifted and talented. Mr. Wagner-Yeung has taught: general music, string orchestra, musical theatre, and performing arts. His adaptive string orchestra program has performed at events across NYC including the Brooklyn Borough Arts Festival, Samuel Stern Awards, and Chancellors Town Hall on Special Education. His musical theatre program has put on several adapted performances of Broadway Jr shows, as well as shows from other musical theatre resources. Mr. Wagner-Yeung is also an educational consultant, and works with districts and organizations focused on students with exceptionalities. He has presented workshops at the state, national, and international level - and has had articles published at the state, national and international level. The primary focus of his professional work includes neurodiversity in musical settings, using music to build lifelong connections for all students, engaging students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in musical settings, and adapting the string orchestra experience for all students.Brian Wagner-Yeung, Music Education.
