Doctoral Programs
Doctoral Study in the Sciences at Brooklyn College
The science departments at Brooklyn College are among the best in the City University of New York. Many of our faculty participate in a unique geographically distributed consortial model for doctoral training administered through the City University of New York Graduate Center in Manhattan. Doctoral students in the sciences can choose to work in labs and classrooms on the Brooklyn College campus with some of the stellar faculty researchers in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer and information science, earth and environmental science, physics, and psychology. Our faculty are actively engaged in well-funded research in departments large enough to offer many opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary research but small enough to provide a personalized community supporting the scientific and professional development of all our doctoral students. Many of the department laboratories are new or have been refurbished recently. All are well-equipped with cutting-edge equipment and technology.
Science doctoral students are both supported by the individual departments to further their own research interests and encouraged to become engaged in faculty projects. Local, national, and international collaborations by our faculty often lead to collaborations, networking, the arrangement of postdoctoral opportunities, and securing future jobs in and outside of academia. Brooklyn College is dedicated to offering students professional development workshops in such areas as science teaching, grant writing, laboratory management, effective scientific communication, writing in the sciences, building a competitive curriculum vitae, and searching for academic, industrial, and research jobs. The commitment of our faculty members to our students does not end when they file their dissertations. Our faculty will continue to serve our students as a supportive professional mentoring network as they advance in their careers.

Advantages and Attractions of Living and Working in Brooklyn
Brooklyn College is situated in the heart of New York City's most lively and intriguing borough. Because of the abundance of affordable housing in attractive neighborhoods near campus, students can spend more time on their research and academics instead of commuting. Our beautiful campus has a world-class library and is the most technologically advanced public university campus in the metropolitan area.
There are many attractions that Brooklyn offers to graduate students and their families. But if the great restaurants, entertainment, and cultural venues in Brooklyn aren't enough to occupy our students' free time, midtown Manhattan is only 45 minutes away.
