For Faculty Use
Referring Students for Weekly Writing Tutoring
Instructors who wish to refer their students for intensive weekly one-on-one writing tutoring sessions should print and fill out the Learning Center's Referral for Weekly Tutoring in Writing (pdf). Once you have completed the form, you may send your students, with the completed form, to the Learning Center to speak with a master tutor. Your student will be assigned to a seasoned tutor who will address all writing-related issues indicated on the referral form as well as any other issues the tutor comes across during each session. After completion of the fourth tutoring session, your student's tutor will account for what has been covered in each session in a detailed written progress report that will be sent directly to your faculty mailbox via interdepartmental mail.
Visiting the Learning Center
We encourage faculty members to bring their classes to the Learning Center at the beginning of the semester for a site visit. Historically, we have found that an initial site visit not only serves as a formal introduction to the Learning Center, but also helps to alleviate fears and remove any stigmas that students might associate with tutoring. Site visits usually last for approximately 15 minutes, so we encourage you to schedule your visit during either the first or last 15 minutes of class time (your classroom's proximity to the Learning Center's location could affect your decision). While the general information session conducted during your visit has been designed by the Learning Center, we are happy to tailor the discussion to expound upon information that is relevant to specific assignments and subject areas.
To arrange a visit to the Learning Center for your class, e-mail the Learning Center. In your e-mail, be sure to include the following information:
- Instructor's name
- Course name
- Days and times that the course meets
- Number of students enrolled in the course
- Any specific requests you may have regarding the content discussed during the visit
Learning Center Class Presentation
Can't make it to the center with your whole class? Then the Learning Center will come to you! A staff member will gladly visit your classroom to discuss the merits of tutoring in addition to explaining how the center can best meet the needs of your student population. Presentations usually last for approximately 15 minutes, so we ask that you set aside time either at the beginning or end of class to avoid too much of a disruption to your lesson plan for the day.
E-mail all requests for class presentations to the Learning Center. In your e-mail, be sure to include the following information:
- Instructor's name
- Course name
- Days and times that the course meets
- Classroom location (building and room number)
- Any specific requests you may have regarding the content discussed during the visit
