The four-year degree map is designed to help you take the right courses in the right order so you can graduate in four years. It also helps you distinguish what courses qualify as Pathways courses, or Major courses, or General Elective courses. Ideally, you should follow the four-year degree map as closely as possible, but you are free to make some adjustments so long as the prerequisite requirements are satisfied.
*Students must complete five advanced ITAL courses from: ITAL 2021, ITAL 2024, ITAL 2120, ITAL 2432, ITAL 3510, ITAL 3515, ITAL 3518, ITAL 3525.
(Students may substitute two of the following courses related in content and purpose for the above requirement: ARTD 3030 or ARTD 3038 (not both), ENGL 3164, ENGL 3192, HIST 3261, INDS 2012, INDS 2025, JUST 4435. Any other course substitution requires departmental permission. While courses taken toward completion of the major may be taught in English or Italian, majors in Italian Language and Literature are required, in the event of the former, to do the work in Italian.)
Students who place out of ITAL 1010, ITAL 1020, and ITAL 1030 due to proficiency, will still need to complete 42 credits of Pathways courses, including 12 credits of College Option.
If the student is a native speaker, or has taken advanced courses in high school, the first ITAL course at Brooklyn College should be ITAL 2120 or an equivalent composition course. The student can then take ITAL 2030W the following term.
In conjunction with the four-year degree map, you should review Degree Works, and the Brooklyn College website, for an approved list of courses in your major. Overall, it is best to review your academic plan with your advisor on a regular basis.
