Annual Reappointment

Faculty

Faculty reappointment without tenure or certificate of continuous employment (CCE) is initiated at the department level by the chair and the appointments committee. For first-year faculty, the process occurs in the spring semester of that first year. The personnel file is prepared and made available to the appointments committee at the onset of the semester. Second and subsequent reappointments are completed during the fall semester. Personnel files are updated for review by the end of September. After reviewing the files, the committee deliberates and votes on whether to recommend or not to recommend for annual reappointment. The chair, on behalf of the committee, notifies the candidate in writing of the decision.

Whether the department decision is to recommend or not to recommend, the process continues to the College-wide Personnel and Budget Committee for the second step in the process. The committee reviews the candidate’s file, deliberates, and then votes to recommend or not to recommend for reappointment. The voting members of this committee are all department chairs.

All recommendations and votes are forwarded to the president, who makes the final determination on whether a candidate is recommended to the CUNY Board of Trustees for annual reappointment without tenure/CCE. First-year reappointment candidates receive notification of the president's decision on or before April 1. Candidates who are in their second or subsequent years receive notice of the decision on or before December 1. All notifications are in writing.

Note: Faculty appointed in the spring semester are considered for reappointment, during this initial semester. These candidates receive notification of the president’s decision on or before May 1.

College Laboratory Technicians

The reappointment of college laboratory technicians starts at the department level by the chair and the appointments committee. (In non-academic departments, it is the area head who initiates the process.) First-year college laboratory technicians are considered for reappointment to a second year during the first spring semester after initial appointment. The personnel file is prepared and made available to the appointments committee at the onset of that semester. Second and subsequent reappointments are completed during the fall semester. Personnel files are updated for review by the end of September. After reviewing the file, the committee deliberates and votes on whether to recommend or not to recommend for annual reappointment. The chair, on behalf of the committee, notifies the candidate in writing of the decision. In non-academic departments notification is written by the area head.

Regardless of whether the department decision was positive or negative, the process continues to the provost, who will review the candidate’s file and make a recommendation to reappointment or not.

All recommendations and votes are forwarded to the president, who makes the final determination on whether a candidate is recommended to the CUNY Board of Trustees for annual reappointment without tenure. First-year reappointment candidates receive notification of the president’s decision on or before April 1. Candidates who are in their second or subsequent years receive notice of the decision on or before December 1. All notifications are in writing.

Research Series Staff

The reappointment of research assistants and research associates occurs in the spring semester. The process is initiated by the chair and the appointments committee. Files are updated by early March and made available to the committee. After reviewing the file, the committee deliberates and votes on whether to recommend or not to recommend for annual reappointment. The chair, on behalf of the committee, notifies the candidate in writing of the decision.

All reappointment candidates receive notification of the president’s decision on or before May 1st.
