Welcome to the Fall 2018 Semester
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the fall 2018 semester! I am always excited to see the movement and energy on campus on the first day of classes.
As you know, last year, we completed the Brooklyn College Strategic Plan 2018–2023 (pdf). Thank you to everyone who participated in developing it. This year, we begin in earnest to implement the plan.
I am thrilled that we are joined this fall by a new provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, Anne Lopes. She comes to Brooklyn by way of John Jay College, where she served in a variety of academic positions, including provost, associate provost for strategic initiatives, dean of graduate studies, and dean of undergraduate studies.
I am also excited about the 25 new faculty members who are joining us this year. Last week, I attended a reception where I got a chance to chat with many of them. They are even more impressive than their tremendous résumés suggest. Welcome to all of you!
We are preparing for two accreditation processes this year. The college will go through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education reaccreditation process, which will involve almost all of our academic programs. Additionally, the Murray Koppelman School of Business will host a site visit as part of its quest to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Everyone is pulling together to make these reviews as successful as possible.
Our new Leonard & Claire Tow Center for the Performing Arts is now open at the Hillel Gate entrance. It is a gorgeous facility that offers our performing arts programs an outstanding set of venues, including a state-of-the-art academic theater and rehearsal and performance spaces. Please make a point of visiting the Tow sometime this fall and experience a theatrical or musical performance by our talented students and faculty.
In closing, I want to express gratitude for the beauty of the campus at this time of year, and the hard work of the groundskeepers who ensure that our trees, shrubbery, lawns, and flowers are inviting so that we return to our shared academic home with joy in our hearts. Thank you!
I wish you all a great fall semester.
