CUNY Assessment Test in Writing (CATW)
COVID-19 Notice
While the campus remains closed due to COVID-19, the Office of Testing will not be administering the CATW. Students who are required to test to determine placement in the English class suited to their skill level will be contacted to write an online diagnostic test (ESLD).
The CATW is a 90-minute standardized writing test that measures students’ ability to do college-level writing in English. Students read a short passage then write an essay in response to the reading passage as instructed. A score of 56 or higher on the CATW is needed for a student to be considered proficient in reading and writing and placed into English 1010. A score below 56 will require the student take a developmental ESL course.
A non-electronic (bilingual if preferred) dictionary is permitted for this test.
Test Preparation
Preparing for the test is the key to increasing your chances of obtaining a score that will meet the proficiency standards and requirements for placement in English 1010.
