  • U.S. News and World Report Ranks Brooklyn College #1 for Campus Ethnic Diversity and Among the Top Public Colleges in the North

News Release

News Release - For Immediate Release

U.S. News and World Report Ranks Brooklyn College #1 for Campus Ethnic Diversity and Among the Top Public Colleges in the North

Sept. 9, 2019

The College Also Ranks #3 for Least Debt at Graduation and #3 for the Social Mobility of its Graduates Reflecting the Significant Value of a Brooklyn College Education

For the second year in a row, Brooklyn College ranks #1 among North Regional Universities for campus ethnic diversity, according to the new 2020 rankings released today by U.S. News and World Report. The college is also ranked #14 in the Top Public Schools category among North Regional Universities in 2020, which is a significant leap upward from its 2019 ranking at #19.

The college ranks #3 for having students with the least amount of debt at graduation and #3 for the social mobility of its graduates, according to U.S. News and World Report. Brooklyn College’s undergraduate teaching degree program also ranks #17 among North Regional Universities.

“We are especially proud of our #1 ranking for campus ethnic diversity because it is a reflection of our mission to educate immigrants, first-generation college students, and others who represent the diversity of this great borough,” said Brooklyn College President Michelle J. Anderson. “This is an exciting moment for Brooklyn College as these high-profile rankings reinforce the exceptional educational value that we provide to our students.”

Last month, Brooklyn College was ranked #35 “Best Colleges for Your Money” by Money magazine out of 744 schools nationwide for quality, affordability, and alumni success. Other CUNY colleges ranked include John Jay College of Criminal Justice (53), Queens College (100), Lehman College (110), The City College of New York (115), Hunter College (128), and the College of Staten Island (418). The Money rankings examine factors like net costs after financial aid, the amount typically borrowed through federal programs, loan default and repayment rates, and the institution’s effectiveness in moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond over the past 20 years. Both Forbes and The Princeton Review also listed Brooklyn College as one of the Best Value Colleges in the country in 2019.

The 18,000 students enrolled at Brooklyn College come from around the world and speak more than 100 languages. Less than a week ago, on September 3, the college opened a new Immigrant Student Success Office to provide comprehensive resources for its immigrant and first-generation students. From academic and financial aid advising to free legal services and faculty mentoring, the new office promises to provide personalized support to enhance success for these students.

Brooklyn College’s U.S. News #3 rankings for least debt at graduation and for the social mobility of its graduates are significant because they reflect the incredible value of the education the college provides. All other institutions in the top five for least debt at graduation were part of CUNY—Lehman is #1, John Jay College is #2, Queens College is #4, and Baruch College is #5.
