Women’s Center Coordinates Women’s History Month Events

March 2, 2023

By Rich Pietras

Brooklyn College is proud to announce its 2023 schedule of Women’s History Month events. The calendar, coordinated by the Women’s Center, was designed to recognize and celebrate the fight toward gender equity, as well as acknowledge the contributions of important predecessors and contemporary trailblazers. These campus-wide events are a collaboration of student clubs, departments, and offices across the campus, including Women’s and Gender Studies; the Women's Center; the Office of the President; and many more.

One highlight will be a week-long series of events for the college’s annual Hess Week that will celebrate the Hess Scholar-in-Residence for 2022–23, author and activist Barbara Smith. Smith will discuss the values that have shaped her remarkable life with the extended campus community on March 16 from 5–6:30 p.m.

(2:15–3:30 p.m., Woody Tanger Auditorium, Brooklyn College Library)

This panel takes its inspiration from the Combahee River Collective Statement’s observation that, “If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.” (Co-sponsored by the Cal State Los Angeles Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department.)

March 16: Working for Liberation and Having a Damn Good Time

(11 a.m. –12:30 p.m., Woody Tanger Auditorium, Brooklyn College Library)

March 21: Empowering Our Entrepreneurs: Women in Business Pop-Up

(12:30.–2 p.m., Student Center, 5th floor)
