Her “ref-u-gee” series will be on exhibit from October through January, and is free to the public.
Brooklyn College is proud to welcome Audrey Frank Anastasi to campus to discuss her most recent work, "ref-u-gee"—a series of artistic works that focus on worldwide mass migration.
A prolific visual artist working primarily in two-dimensional mediums, Anastasi has turned her focus to worldwide mass migration with a series of 180 small paintings, the quantity in reference to the number 18, which, in the Jewish faith, is synonymous to the Hebrew word "chai," or life.
In Anastasi’s words, migrants are "so often throughout history, those throngs of people who are perceived as ‘other’ [and] are rejected, even reviled, for their culture, ethnicity, religious beliefs, or geographic origins. Simply put, they are people seen as too different to elicit empathy. Art can serve to remind us of this shared humanity."
Starting on October 20 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brooklyn College Library Lobby, Anastasi will discuss her “ref-u-gee” series, as well as her long career comprising of over 200 group exhibitions as well as 20 solo exhibitions. Following this talk, an opening reception will be held in the library lobby on October 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
These events are free and open to the public. However, non-CUNY members must e-mail Miriam Deutch, Associate Professor, at MiriamD@brooklyn.cuny.edu with the requested date of their visit and be prepared to show proof of vaccination at the Campus Road and Hillel entrance. Alternatively, non-CUNY individuals who wish to view the exhibit should refer to the college’s instructions for visitor access to campus.
