On Their Way

May 30, 2012

Approximately 4,500 undergraduate and graduate students will receive their degrees and advanced certificates on Wednesday, May 30, and Thursday, May 31. Twelve members of the Class of 2012 are featured in the photo gallery, revealing to us who they are and the goals they wish to pursue. Collectively, they tell us a great deal about how the college brought them to this juncture, and how the education they received will support them in the years to come.

'Once I was a part of the BioMimetics Cognitive Robotics Laboratory, I interacted with ambitious, hardworking Ph.D. students who had a wealth of knowledge. Watching them diligently progress in their research and teach courses while managing to study for their own courses was inspiring. My project has built the character needed to engage in research. It goes beyond skill and intellect; it takes drive, patience and focus.' — Ashley Warmington, psychology. She will be attending graduate school in the fall to study neuroscience. 'The Fiction M.F.A. Program has provided not only invaluable writing skills and habits, but also a trusted community that will surround me even after the program is over.' — Katie Bellas, creative writing–fiction. She is a recipient of a Provincetown Visiting Fellowship in writing and will begin her residency in October. 'Being on both Brooklyn College's cross country and cheerleading teams has helped me realize that we are all born with the ability to accomplish great things as long as we believe in ourselves and never give up.' — Rosanna Hui, health and nutrition sciences. She will be attending New York University's accelerated nursing program and will continue for a master's degree in public health. 'Since my freshman year, I've followed the school's motto — 'Nothing without great effort' — and it has led me to where I want to be.' — Natalya Novohatko, business management and accounting, graduating summa cum laude. She has lined up an internship at the Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C. 'The clinical practicum in the Speech Department really helped to form and shape the kind of clinician I want to be.' — Rachael Lebovitch, speech-language pathology. She is pursuing a career as a school speech therapist. 'My internship at PricewaterhouseCoopers provided great contacts and real-world experience.' — Dan Patsis, finance and business management. He was hired by PricewaterhouseCoopers immediately after graduation. 'Effective networking with our alumni has been one of the most important keys to my success. I would say to any student that it works.' — Wissam Alherech, business. He was recently hired as a public accountant with Deloitte Touche. 'Of all the schools I applied to, Brooklyn College had what I wanted. The seminars held by the Magner Center for Career Development and Internships were particularly important in sharpening my professionalism and preparing me for my career.' — Jeremiah McGinley, business management. He will be taking the real estate exam to prepare for a career in real estate development. 'The Brooklyn College Global Medical Brigades gave me the opportunity to impact the lives of people abroad, who in return impacted my future of becoming a medical doctor.' — Sabia Akbar, psychology. She served as the vice president of the Global Brigade club and is applying to medical school for fall 2013. 'Brooklyn College became a staple in my life and taught me the importance of time management to achieve everything I want to do.' — Handel Edwards, political science, and philosophy and law. He is studying for the LSAT and plans for apply to Columbia University in the fall. 'Given the reputation and expertise of my program's faculty, I feel really prepared and confident to begin my career.' — Gina-Marie Principe, speech-language pathology. She would like to work with children in a pediatric hospital. 'One of the most rewarding experiences was participating in the research of several faculty members, and being given the opportunity to present the research at national conferences. It was exciting to be part of important research and speak about it outside the classroom.' — Isabel Rodriguez, psychology. She will be attending the University of Rochester on a full scholarship to study clinical psychology.
