Play Therapy, Advanced Certificate
Student Learning Outcomes
The program is designed so that students in the master’s and advanced certificate programs in School Psychology and in the master’s program in School Counseling may take courses leading concurrently to the Advanced Certificate in Play Therapy. The applied clinical emphasis of the Advanced Certificate Program strengthens the students’ clinical skills and enhance their post-master’s professional opportunities in a variety of applied settings.
In addition to enhancing the skills of current students in the Graduate School Psychologist Program and the School Counselor Program, the proposed Advanced Certificate Program is designed for outreach to licensed and certified clinicians including school psychologists, clinical and counseling psychologists, school counselors, social workers, mental health counselors, and psychotherapists who wish to extend their expertise in working with children and youth with diverse needs. The curriculum presents four courses in play therapy that prepare candidates to work with a broad spectrum of clinical populations of culturally and linguistically diverse children, youth, and families. This is an area of high-need; expertise in the area of play therapy enhances clinicians’ professional profiles and presents opportunities for career advancement.
The Advanced Certificate Program is designed to satisfy the instructional requirements of the Association for Play Therapy (APT) to become a Registered Play Therapist (RPT), and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S).
