The Caribbean Studies B.A. is a dual-major. All students therefore must also complete a second major alongside Caribbean Studies. That major can be anything you’d like. Still, it is strongly recommended that you meet with the Director of the Caribbean Studies program upon declaring your majors in order to customize your degree map accordingly.
The four-year degree map is designed to help you take the right courses in the right order so you can graduate in four years. It also helps you distinguish what courses qualify as Pathways courses, or Major courses, or General Elective courses. Ideally, you should follow the four-year degree map as closely as possible, but you are free to make some adjustments so long as the prerequisite requirements are satisfied.
*Students must complete five of the following courses, three of which have to be from different academic departments: AFST 1040, AFST 3145, AFST 3147, AFST 3240, AFST 3340, AFST 3344, CAST 2300, CAST 3900, HIST 3515, 3517, PRLS 3125, PRLS 3315. Students may be able to substitute courses in relevant topics with the approval of the program director.
Courses taken to satisfy requirements in the Caribbean Studies program may not be applied to also satisfy dual major requirements.
In conjunction with the four-year degree map, you should review Degree Works, and the Brooklyn College website, for an approved list of courses in your major. Overall, it is best to review your academic plan with your advisor on a regular basis.
