Priority Deadline for the FAFSA—February 1
Students seeking financial aid must apply for financial aid every year. Students seeking to borrow Federal Direct Loan must also file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year. The application is free and should only be filed using the direct FAFSA link.
The priority deadline to submit the FAFSA to the Brooklyn College Office of Financial Aid is February 1 of each year for the coming academic year. The FAFSA becomes on October 1 each year of the following academic year.
NOTE: Students who have not filed by the priority deadline can and should still file the FAFSA. Students who file by the priority deadline are more likely to be considered for additional federal student aid programs such as the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) or Federal Work-Study (FWS). These are programs with limited funding and are therefore not available to all applicants. Filers after February 1 are less likely to be considered for these programs when a financial aid offer is made.
When Is the FAFSA Deadline?
The FAFSA is available for 21 months, closing on June 30 of the full year following when the application opened. For example, the 2023–24 FAFSA is available October 2022 and closes on June 30, 2024. However, established federal processing deadlines for institutions prohibit the college from processing a FAFSA that was filed after the student's last date of enrollment.
I Am No Longer Enrolled. Can I Still File the FAFSA?
No. Students who have not filed a FAFSA for the academic year or term and who are no longer enrolled for the academic year or term (whether the semester ended or the student withdrew from all courses) have missed the federally established deadline to be considered for Federal Student Aid programs for the academic year or term they applied for.
For example, students who were enrolled in the fall and first file their FAFSA after the fall semester is over, and are not enrolled in the spring semester, are not eligible for federal financial aid for the fall semester that has passed. A student who withdrew completely in the middle of the semester and had not yet filed cannot be eligible for aid by filing after they withdrew.
What if I Filed My FAFSA but It Was Incomplete?
Students who cease enrollment must have filed and submitted a FAFSA and must have resolved any rejected application message before they stopped enrollment in order to be eligible for financial aid. Students who file a FAFSA after stopping enrollment or who did not resolve outstanding application rejection messages are not eligible for federal student financial aid for that term unless they re-enroll in a subsequent term in the academic year.
What if My FAFSA was Complete but I Did Not List Brooklyn College on the FAFSA?
If you filed the FAFSA while you were enrolled at Brooklyn College but did not list Brooklyn College on your application you may still be eligible for federal financial aid. Please schedule a financial aid planning session with a financial aid adviser for more information. Refer to our Services page for instructions on how to make an appointment.
What if My FAFSA Was Selected for Verification?
If your FAFSA is complete and you were selected for verification, then you have 100 days from your last day of enrollment to submit documents to the Office of Financial Aid in order to ensure adequate time to process your record before the 120-day processing deadline. Please speak with a representative at the Enrollment Services Center or Virtual Financial Aid office for more information.
