Nicholas Nelson

Doctoral student in-residence
Nicholas R. Nelson, composer, has been composing vocal, choral, orchestral and experimental music since his early years. After a misspent youth, he turned seriously toward experimental art music in 1996. Nick received his international premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe festival in 1998.
While attending the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., Nick's music was performed by the Eastman School Symphony Orchestra, the Ossia New Music ensemble and the Tuba Mirum tuba ensemble. After moving to Brooklyn to study at Brooklyn College and with Morton Subotnick, he has been in residence with the Brooklyn College Conservatory Orchestra, and the Contempo ensemble under the direction of Ursula Oppens. Nick has been featured on Electronic Music New York's Emerging Artist Concerts, part of the International Electroacoustic Music Festival, and he co-founded the new music collective dfe. In addition, last year Nick won the prestigious John Cage Award for excellence in experimental composition. When not composing, Nick works providing electronic music to such performers as Seth Woods and Devora Geller on their own concerts.
