Maya Moorley, '97

As a child in Guyana, Maya Moorley, ’97, already knew she wanted to become a doctor. But she wanted her college education to do more than prepare her for medical school. Through the B.A.-M.D. Program at Brooklyn College, she has been able to explore a broad range of interests. A philosophy major, Maya believes that her liberal arts training will make her a better, more compassionate physician. And her professors, "always willing to listen," are models for medical practice as well. As she studies the world’s philosophies, Maya has learned more about her own culture. Encouraged to write a thesis on women in Caribbean literature, she developed a new appreciation for the meaning of diversity at Brooklyn College. "It’s one thing to talk about diversity," she says, "but it’s another thing to live with diversity. That is what Brooklyn College is all about."
